A key signature is a set of sharps (♯) or flats (♭) placed on the staff. The key signature is written after the clef at the beginning of the staff but can also appear in other places for a key change, in that case a set of ♮ is written to cancel the sharps or flats of the previous signature. The sharps or flats in the key signature are valid for the corresponding notes the ♮ natural symbol is used to cancel the sharp/flat in a signature.
