Staff 1

The following is a typical five line staff.


The staff consists of 5 vertical lines that are numbered from the bottom, the lowest being number 1 and the top line number 5. The four spaces between the lines are also numbered from the bottom, the space between line 1 and 2 is called the first space.

Notes, rests, symbols and terms are placed on, above and below the staff. The vertical positions of the notes indicates the pitch.


To indicate the pitch a G- or F- clef is placed on the beginning of the staff. The clef indicates the pitch and the name of the notes on the staff.

There are 7 notes names and they are ordered the same as the alphabet, A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. On the G-clef the G is on the second line, A on the second space, B on the 3 line, etc. On the F-clef F is on the 4 line, E on the 3 space, D on the 3 line.
