A musical piece is divided into measures, where the first measure are the notes included before the first vertical bar, and the second measure are the notes after the first vertical bar etc. A time signature appears at the beginning of a piece and specifies how many beats are contained in each measure and the note length given to each beat.

A time signature consists of two numbers, one stacked above the other.

Simple time signatures

When the upper number is 2, 3 or 4 the time signature is simple.

Notice that the following signatures have the same duration 2/2 = 4/4 and 2/4 = 4/8 but they both differ in beat.
